Bogart Stars in Darci’s Singapore Double
04 Jun 2013

The winners keep coming in Singapore for the Pencarrow-bred sire Darci Brahma with Goliath winning on Friday night and the smart Pencarrow bred two-year-old Bogart following quickly with a win on Sunday.

The three-year-old Goliath (NZ) was the first of the pair to taste victory, taking his second straight win at Kranji on Friday night in the S$55,000 Class 4 Stakes (1700m) for his trainer Steven Burridge.

On Sunday night the Michael Freedman trained two-year-old Bogart (ex Pavan, by Centaine) completed the double when breaking maiden ranks at just his second start in the S$65,000 Initiation Stakes over 1200 metres.

Ridden by Manoel Nunes, Bogart jumped well from the gates to lead and, in an impressive display, kicked away from the field to win by 1.75 lengths.

“He had to do a fair amount of work early in the race to get across to the front, and during the race I thought that if he could finish in the first three then he’s done a very good job,” said Freedman.

“To keep going like he did and win I thought was a very good effort and he looks like he will develop into a nice horse.

“I said on Friday night that even though these two-year-olds get weight off the older horses they still have to be good to win.

“This horse is going to keep improving and his pedigree says that he will be better off once he gets up to a mile and possibly even further.”

Bogart was bred by Peter and Philip Vela and was purchased by Michael Freedman/Michael Wallace Bloodstock from Pencarrow Stud at the 2012 Karaka Premier Sale for $155,000.

He is owned by the Mummify Stable who also races the Darci Brahma three-year-old Ronnie Brown.

From the Centaine mare Pavan, Bogart is a grandson of Pencarrow Stud’s Group 1 South Australian Oaks winner Marmalitre, and a half-brother to the stakes placed Let Loushe (Black Minnaloushe) and the current three-time winner for Pencarrow, Sovereign Rose (Pins). Pavan produced a brother to Bogart which has been retained by the stud and she was covered again by Darci Brahma last season.

Darci Brahma leads Singapore’s Sires’ Premiership by Winners with 10, three ahead of second-placed Flying Spur, and is currently second on Singapore’s Sires’ Premiership by Earnings with his progeny earning just under S$1 million in stakes so far this season.

Darci Brahma also currently sits in third position on the NZ Sires Premiership by both Earnings and Wins behind O’Reilly and Savabeel.
