Pencarrow Colt Jumps to Head of Karaka Million Order 21 Sep 2009
Speedy Encosta de Lago two-year-old Encosta Diablo (Encosta De Lago x Devil’s Lair, by Sir Tristram) - a $600,000 purchase by David Ellis at the 2009 Karaka Premier Sale - scored impressively on debut at Riccarton on Saturday and jumped to joint-equal lead in the current Karaka Million order of entry.

Though still in the early stages of the journey towards the $1,000,000 juvenile event on January 31 at Ellerslie, Encosta Diablo proved the consummate professional at Riccarton in beating off five rivals in a hands and heels ride by Kylie Williams. Trained by Mark Walker he is owned by the Te Akau Four Colts’ Syndicate.

His winning margin over 600m was a dominant two and a quarter lengths in front of Windwhistle (Traditionally), with a further one and a quarter lengths back to third-placed Premier Lady (Eltawaasul).

From Pencarrow Stud’s unraced broodmare Devil’s Lair, Encosta Diablo is a half-brother to two Group winners including Group 1 NZ Oaks winner Vapour Trail (Jetball) and Group 2 Great Northern Guineas winner Santagostino (Giant’s Causeway), both of whom reside at Pencarrow Stud, with the latter due to Darci Brahma in October.

Adding to this, Encosta Diablo has a yearling half-sister by Pins who will be retained by Pencarrow Stud for racing and breeding purposes.

The son of Encosta De Lago has a stallion’s pedigree and there is no doubt Te Akau will be aiming him at a stallion making Group 1 contest/s in the next couple of seasons.
