Yours Wins Waverly Cup
15 March 2010
Pencarrow Stud-bred Yours (Van Nistelrooy x Pavan, by Centaine) returned to his very best form on Sunday when he produced a strong late effort to land the Steelform Roofing Group Waverly Cup (2200m) yesterday.
The $25,000 event drew eight competitors and the result was fitting for trainer Bill Thurlow who is an active member of the Waverly Racing Club which races on their home track on just the one occasion annually.
The Cup is the Club’s feature race with the whole event strongly supported by the wider Waverly community.
Yours was deemed the outsider by punters and he played to those predicitions in running when sitting last two lengths off the main pack.
Robert Hannam sat patiently on the five-year-old gelding with race favourite Aintree (Kaapstad) bowling along in front and it was not until the home straight that Hannam really asked Yours to extend.
Extend he did to loud cheers from the crowd and Yours flashed home to beat Aintree by half a head on the line in 2.14.85.
Yours was purchased by Thurlow for $11,000 at the 2006 Select Yearling Sale from Pencarrow Stud and he has now amassed over $40,000 in prize-money with five victories in 21 starts.
Yours is a son of Pavan who placed in both the Group 1 NZ Oaks and Group 1 Australasian Oaks for Pencarrow. At stud she has produced well-performed Melbourne sprinter-miler Let Loushe (Black Minnaloushe) who has won on seven occasions for Lee Freedman and placed in the Listed Century Stakes.
Pavan, now a 15 year old, still resides at Pencarrow where she produced a Darci Brahma colt in 2009 and returned to the same leading Karaka 2010 first crop sire, the result of which is due this coming spring.
