Pencarrow Expecting in 2009

Pencarrow Stud is expecting some fine additions to their breed this spring, and all of them, along with pedigree and foaling dates, are now available on the website.

Located under the ‘Broodmare’ section of the website is now a full list of foaling dates, with some exciting foals due in just over six months time.

August – said to be the birth month of Gladiators

August will prove to be the busiest foaling period for Pencarrow staff with nineteen mares expected to foal. First cab off the rank may well prove to be one of two ‘foster mums’, Helen, a standard-bred, who provides a most important service to Pencarrow Stud. She steps in when mother nature deals an unfriendly blow, or when colostrum is needed, or occasionally to ease the travelling process for mares visiting Australian-based stallions.

Highlights in August include Desert Lily (Green Desert) due to Sebring’s sire More Than Ready on 16 August . The daughter of outstanding race mare Habibti (Habitat), Desert Lily hails from the supreme Eight Carat family which she has added to through her Group 2 winning daughter Lafleur (Zabeel), herself due on 20 August.

Lafleur produced the very exciting Amaryllis (Red Ransom) with her first foal and the three-time winner is due to foal to Australian Champion sire Redoute’s Choice this spring.

September – said to be the birth month of vibrance and valor

September sees eighteen foals due from 2 September to 28 September, including 8 Group 1 performers and/or producers.
The ‘pressure’ month will see ‘Cup’s Queen’ Ethereal (Rhythm) foal to Encosta De Lago, and her Group 1 NZ Derby placed daughter Uberalles (Giant’s Causeway) foal to Exceed and Excel.

Group 1 NZ Oaks winner Sarwatch (Jetball) and Group 1 NZ 1000 Guineas placegetter Velvet and Satin (Carnegie) are due to produce a foal by O’Reilly, as is De Beers’ mother Chimeara (Danehill). The remainder, Group 1 Shikoba producing Summary (Tierce) and Group 1 NZ Oaks placed Filante Etoile (Soviet Star), will birth second crop foals by Champion NZ racehorse Darci Brahma.

October – said to be the birth month of peace and wholeness

October will not be much different from August and September numbers wise, with seventeen due to foal in this month.

Darci Brahma foals will flavor the month with seven due, including Group 2 winner Santagostino (Giant’s Causeway) on the 14th, and world record priced Better than Honour’s half sister, Silver and Roses (Sadler’s Wells), on the 1st.

The month will also see foals by young Danehill-line stallions Holy Roman Emperor, Keeper, Stratum, and Casino Prince, with Our Echezeaux (Zabeel) set to foal to the pinnacle of Danehill’s success, Redoutes Choice, on the 9th.

November – said to be the birth month of optimisim and wealth

Things will get quieter in the foaling paddocks of Pencarrow in November, with just eight due, the last of the broodmare band, but certainly not least.

Darci Brahma’s dam Grand Echezeaux (Zabeel) is due to Pins on 2 November, a particular highlight of 2009. Other highlights include J’Dane’s dam, Affirmed Lane (Affirmed), foaling to Champion NZ sire Zabeel, and Elbaz Belle(Catbird) due to foal to first season sire, and leading European sprinter, Red Clubs.

The conclusion of the 2009 breeding season will see a total of sixty-two mares foal at Pencarrow Stud, a record number. Darci Brahma, whom Pencarrow Stud bred and part-own, with nineteen in-foal mares, is the best represented stallion again this year, followed by O’Reilly and Pins with four apiece.

The dominance of Danehill(pictured) and his dynasty is present in the Pencarrow Stud mating plans with thirty six, 58%, of the sixty two mares due to drop to a Danehill line stallion.
