Break Free on Form in Singapore

Pencarrow Stud-bred Break Free (Fasliyev – Tehama, by Centaine) continued his fantastic form in Singapore on Friday night with a one length victory in the Graduation Stakes (1100m) on the polytrack.

The first foal of Listed CJC Warstep Stakes winner Tehama is trained by Champion Singapore trainer Laurie Laxon, who has raced the gelding ten times for three wins and five placings.

His latest victory in the hands of Robbie Fradd left little doubt that he was the best horse in the field, working hard outside the initial leader of the race Ariam (Encosta De Lago), before assuming the pacemaker role himself. The brown gelding carted the rest of the field into the race, but even the eventual second placed Ariam, who enjoyed the box seat run, could not get past Break Free.

His winning time of 1.05.4 took his total earnings to S$141,453 (approx. NZ$185,000), not all bad considering he was purchased as a yearling by Bruce Wallace for just $27,500 from Karaka’s 2007 Select Yearling Sale. Break Free is raced by Perfectum Stable in Singapore.

Break Free is a three-quarter brother to Pencarrow’s Darcybee (Fasliyev – Eminent Walk, by Gaius), a winner of the Listed CJC Pegasus Stakes whose first foal, a colt by Encosta De Lago, made $450,000 at Karaka 2009 to the bid of Bruce Wallace who clearly likes the family.

Other notable horses in the family include Group 1 winners Cheyne Walk, Boardwalk Angel, Coogee Walk, Crawl, and Marching, all descendents of 1971 Group 1 Golden Slipper winning Fairy Walk (Minor Portion), the Champion 2YO of her year in Australia.

Her great grand-daughter Tehama has left three-year-old Jesse Owens (Danzero), and an unnamed Savabeel two-year-old filly, both unraced, since leaving Break Free. Tehama is due to foal to Choisir on the 25th of August in 2009, while her half-sister, Darcybee, is due to foal to Flying Spur just six days later.
