Pencarrow Fillies Off for Education

Pencarrow Stud’s policy of racing the majority of the fillies that they breed ensures that every year, around this time, there is a buzz in the air as the yearlings head off to the breakers for their education on the racing game.

Each group has a potential Ethereal, Romanee Conti, Noble Heights, Grand Echezeaux, Sarwatch, or Insouciant in its midst and the twenty-five filly foals of 2007 are no different.

The yearling fillies are about to be broken-in by Paul Pertab, Danny Walker, and Eion Kemp, who will receive the fillies in groups of six, with the education process usually taking six weeks. After this initial work, they will then return to Pencarrow Stud’s Te Kowhai property where they will spend the rest of the Autumn running and strengthening on the hills before returning to work in the winter.

The 2009 group has some exciting prospects, and below are some highlights in the different aptitude classifications.

Charge Forward – Paint Me a Dream (Deputy Minister)

• This filly is by Group 1 Galaxy Stakes-winner Charge Forward (Red Ransom) who currently sits second on the Australian first season sires championship after leaving four juvenile winners including Group 3 Sweet Embrace Stakes winner Headway.
• Her dam Paint Me a Dream is a half-sister to outstanding Group 1 sprinter and successful sire Honour and Glory, from the family of Fappiano.

Pins – Virtus (Tale of the Cat)

Stravinsky – Ethereal (Rhythm)

• This filly is the fifth foal of Group 1 Melbourne Cup winner Ethereal. Her sire is Group 1 July Cup winner Stravinsky who has the ability to leave an early maturing type, and there is no reason why this filly should not be a Guineas type filly who progresses on to the Oaks.

Zabeel – Desert Lily (Green Desert)

• This filly is a full sister to La Fleur, a two time winner at Group 2 level in the Royal Stakes and the Sir Tristram Fillies Classic on route to the Oaks where she finished fourth.
• Her second dam is the triple Group 1 winner Habibti, a half sister to three time NZ Broodmare of the Year, Eight Carat.

Redoute’s Choice – La Fleur (Zabeel)

• The third foal of Group 2 winner La Fleur, this filly is by Australian Champion sire Redoute’s Choice whose progeny run at the phenomenal percentage of 12% stakes winners to runners.

The remainder of the fillies are by Johar (4), Redoute's Choice (2), Van Nistelrooy (2), Pentire (2), Red Ransom, Savabeel, Pins, Keeper, Duelled, Stravinsky, Spartacus, Tiger Hill, and Le Bec Fin.
