Mudgway D Day For Insouciant

Peter and Philip Vela of Pencarrow Stud will have no hesitation in adding their valuable four-year-old mare, Insouciant, to their broodmare band if she fails to perform well in the Group 1 $250,000 Mudgway Partsworld Stakes (1400m) at Hastings on Saturday.

The Velas have a wonderful line-up of broodmares already at their Pencarrow Rd-based property.

Insouciant (Keeper x Loudenne) was the 2007/08 New Zealand Bloodstock Filly Of The Year series winner and was the winner of the Group 1 New Zealand One Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Riccarton last November.

"She is already a very valuable prospect as a broodmare," said trainer Mark Walker.

Walker said there can be no question Insouciant was disappointing last time out when resuming at Taupo where she could only manage fourth placing.

"There were a few excuses for her that day but you have to say that overall it was a disappointing effort from her. I did think she would do better," Walker said.

"If she doesn't run well this time then she will be retired to stud," he said.

"I am looking for a much improved run from her in the Mudgway and she has blinkers added to her gear this time," he said.

Insouciant will be ridden by Troy Harris at Hastings. She has drawn favourably at barrier six.
