Successful Cambridge breeding nursery Pencarrow Stud is set to be represented at New Zealand Bloodstock’s 85th National Yearling Sales Series by 22 yearlings across the Premier & Select Sales, commencing on Monday 31 January at Karaka.
Peter & Philip Vela’s Pencarrow Stud was the second highest vendor by average at the 2010 Karaka Premier Sale with yearlings finding homes with a number of astute judges including David Ellis, the Hong Kong Jockey Club, Rogerson Bloodstock, John McArdle, Spicer Thoroughbreds, Mick Price, Edwards/Elkington Racing, Frank Ritchie and BBA - Ireland.
Pencarrow Stud has another strong draft for the 2011 Karaka Sale with 18 yearlings entered in the Premier Sale and four in the Select Sale. Each yearling in the Pencarrow draft has been filmed and video clips are now available to be viewed online.
Amongst Pencarrow's 2011 highlights are:
  • Lot 52, the colt by Darci Brahma from one of the most distinguished families in the world being out of the Sadler’s Wells mare Silver and Roses, a daughter of the multiple Group 1 performer Blush with Pride and a sister to Maryinsky, the dam of Group 1 winners Peeping Fawn and Thewayyouare.

  • Lot 152, the colt by New Zealand’s champion sire Zabeel from Affirmed Lane (Affirmed), the dam of the multiple Group 1 placed J’Adane.
  • Lot 233, the colt by O’Reilly from the Danehill mare Chimeara, the dam of the Group 1 winner De Beers, and a sister to Viking Ruler, Kempinsky and Diamond Like.

In 2010 the Pencarrow Stud draft provided the second highest priced lot in the Sale, the $1.3 million colt by Redoute’s Choice from Grand Echezeaux, bought by leading New Zealand buyer David Ellis.

Grand Echezeaux’s yearling colt by Danehill topped the 2004 Karaka sale and went on to win five Group 1 events in New Zealand and Australia and be crowned New Zealand’s Champion 2YO and 3YO. Now a sire, Darci Brahma has made a good start to his stud career with his son Super Easy winning on debut and coming a dashing second by a whisker in the Group 3 Eclipse Stakes at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day. Darci Brahma will be represented by 50 yearlings at Karaka 2011.
Pencarrow has also been represented on the racetrack by the four-time Group 1 winning racemare - and historic Melbourne and Caulfield Cups double winner - Ethereal.
