Cote D’Or (NZ) Wins at Matamata

Beautifully bred Pencarrow four-year-old Cote D’Or (NZ) (Makfi) picked up the first win of her career with a smart performance in Wednesday’s $7,000 Carrfields Livestock Matamata 1400.

Ridden by Danielle Johnson for local trainers Ken and Bev Kelso, Cote D’Or lived up to her $3.60 favouritism for the race with a polished performance. She raced towards the rear of the field before coming wide at the top of the straight and sprinting past her rivals to win by half a length.

The consistent Cote D’Or has now had six starts for one win, one second, two thirds, a fourth and a fifth.

Bred and raced by Sir Peter Vela, Cote D’Or is out of his Zabeel mare Our Echezeaux (NZ). Herself a winner of two races, Our Echezeaux has produced four winners from four foals to race including the stakes winners Dolmabache (NZ) (Redoute’s Choice) and Pure Elegance (NZ) (Redoute’s Choice).

Our Echezeaux is also the dam of the Frankel yearling that topped the 2016 Premier Sale at Karaka with a price of $1.3 million.

Our Echezeaux is a full-sister to Grand Echezeaux (NZ) (Zabeel), winner of the Group 1 Australasian Oaks and the dam of five winners. Among those are the five-time Group 1 winner and leading sire Darci Brahma (NZ) (Danehill), and the multiple stakes winner and stallion prospect Burgundy (NZ) (Redoute’s Choice).

Another sibling to Our Echezeaux is Romanee Conti (NZ) (Sir Tristram), a Group 1 performer and the dam of Pencarrow’s champion staying mare Ethereal (NZ) (Rhythm).
