Lord Pyrus Delivers Christmas Gift
24 December 2009
Ultra consistent Pencarrow-bred galloper Lord Pyrus (Pyrus x Eminent Walk, by Gaius) delivered the perfect Christmas gift for his connections yesterday when winning in Melbourne.
Now trained by Danny O’Brien for the Sutcliffe family who raced Group 1 Caulfield Cup winner Master O’Reilly from the same stable, Lord Pyrus stepped past the 1500m journey for the first time yesterday when competing in the $30,000 St Razzle Handicap at Sandown over 1800m.
The extra journey at his tenth start proved ideal as the Pencarrow-bred made easy work of the field in winning by a length and a half over The Tiger, with third placed Boom n Zoom a further three and a half lengths away.
The win was the fourth for Lord Pyrus who has only finished worse than third on just one occasion when sixth in the Listed Hussonet Cup over 1200m in September, his first start back in the new season.
Clearly a promising middle-distance athlete, Lord Pyrus has now earned close to NZ$90,000 after being purchased from Pencarrow at Karaka as a weanling for just $6,000, before being traded through the NZB Ready to Run Sale where Liam Sutcliffe secured the good looking black gelding for $45,000.
Lord Pyrus is a half-brother to Tehama (Centaine) and Darcybee (Fasliyev) who both won at black-type level, and his recent form shows he lacks none of the family’s ability.
Their dam Eminent Walk is a daughter of former high-class Australian juvenile Sharp Walk (Listed Ottawa Stakes, Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes runner-up), who is out of the Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes winner Fairy Walk.
The dam of six individual winners, Eminent Walk will be represented at the Karaka 2010 Premier Sale by a Fast n Famous colt at Lot 389.
Pencarrow Stud manager, Leon Casey, describes the colt as “correct and balanced, with a lovely relaxed nature and a mature physique”.

Pencarrow Stud wishes everybody a very Merry Christmas and looks forward to reporting on further success in the New Year with exciting prospects like Martial Art, Pezzaglia, Posavina, Our Ella Belle, and Santangelo all taking part in some important Group races at Ellerslie over the Xmas – New Year period.
