Eighth Winner for Romanee Conti

Latinus (Johar x Romanee Conti, by Sir Tristram) became the eighth individual winner for Pencarrow matron Romanee Conti when he won the Amberly RC Chevalier Farm Maiden at Riccarton just last week.

Latinus was having just his second career start in the 1400m maiden and was settled to the tail of the field by New Zealand’s leading jockey James McDonald.

As the field galloped into the home straight McDonald angled Latinus to the outside of the 11 competitors he would soon pass and Latinus began to lengthen in stride.

In the straight Latinus worked to the line like a promising stayer and stuck his nose down when it counted to score by half a head over Micashera (D’Cash).

Just a three-year-old Latinus’ effort suggested plenty of improvement and his trainer Mark Walker will no doubt be looking forward to stepping the half-brother to Ethereal up in distance this preparation.

Romanee Conti, winner of the 1993 Hong Kong International Cup, has proved a marvel at stud having left nine foals to race, eight of these winning, the other being recent place-getter Orquidea (Montjeu).

Group 1 Melbourne Cup and Group 1 Caulfield Cup winner Ethereal is the obvious highlight of her progeny but Romanee Conti also produced Group 1NZ 1000 Guineas and Group 2 Royal Stakes place-getter Velvet and Satin who now resides at Pencarrow.

Latinus was purchased by the keen eye of David Ellis at the 2008 Karaka Premier Yearling Sale. Ellis paid $180,000 for the colt from the Pencarrow Stud draft, only the third foal of Romanee Conti to be offered at auction. Latinus is raced and owned by Mrs C and D Cairns, MWH Fleming, WG Grime, PJ and PM Vela, SP Singh, and G Thomas.

Romanee Conti was retired from breeding in 2008 after producing her last foal, a two-year-old colt by Stravinsky who has been retained by Pencarrow.
