Early Foaling Mares Return to Pencarrow

Mares due to foal in August returned to Pencarrow Stud this week ahead of the highly anticipated new breeding season.

Pencarrow mares spend the winter months on a gently rolling hill-country farm located in Te Kowhai. The property offers good winter pasture for the in-foal mares, and ensures that a healthy level of fitness is acquired by ‘the girls’ prior to giving birth.

The movement to Te Kowhai also allows Pencarrow Stud pastures to recover and rest so that by this time each year heavily in-foal mares return to lush nutritious grass-filled paddocks.

Foals by Casino Prince, Choisir, Commands, Darci Brahma, Fast n Famous, Flying Spur, High Chaparral, Holy Roman Emperor, Lucky Unicorn, More Than Ready, Redoute’s Choice, Reset and Zabeel are all expected in August.

Highlights include:

·Desert Lily (Green Desert) due to Sebring’s sire More Than Ready on 16 August. A daughter of outstanding Group 1 race mare Habibti (Habitat), Desert Lily hails from the supreme Eight Carat family which she has added to through her Group 2 winning daughter Lafleur (Zabeel).

·Lafleur produced the very exciting Amaryllis (Red Ransom) with her first foal and the three-time winner is due to foal to Australian Champion sire Redoute’s Choice on 20 August.

·Young winning Sadler’s Wells mare Oh So Precious is due to foal to Champion sire Zabeel on 27 August. The foal will represent the same cross as Group 2 winners Zarius and Fatal Attraction for the direct descendant of US Horse of the Year All Along (Targowice), a winner of the Group 1 Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe along with four other Group 1’s.

August will prove to be the busiest foaling month for Pencarrow with nineteen mares due to foal between 11 – 31 August.
