Big Maverick Seals Fourth Singapore Win

Showing his class once again to Singapore race goers, Big Maverick won fresh up in Friday’s S$75,000 Class Three Stakes over 1400m at Kranji to make it an impressive four wins from eight starts.

Bred by Peter and Philip Vela, Big Maverick (NZ)(O’Reilly x Ajfan by Woodman) has earned the respect of his Kiwi ex-pat trainer Laurie Laxon, who purchased Big Maverick as a yearling colt from the Karaka Premier Sale for $87,500.

"He's a smart three-year-old this fellow. I would say he's one of the better three-year-olds racing," Laxon told the Singapore Turf Club.

Sharing the same sire as last year’s winner Lim’s Objective, the O’Reilly gelding has proven black-type ability in Singapore winning the Gr. 3 Stewards Cup 3YO (1400m) in December.

Friday’s win against the older horses was Big Maverick’s (NZ) first start since finishing second to Onceuponatime (NZ) (Van Nistelrooy) in February’s Sg Gr.3 Singapore Guineas (1600m).

Woodman mare, Ajfan, herself Group 1 placed in Europe, produced a Tiger Hill half-brother to Big Maverick that was purchased by Willie Leung's Hong Kong based Magus Equine for $135,000 at this year's Karaka Select Sale. Ajfan is currently in foal to Pentire.

Big Maverick (NZ) will now aim for the Singapore 3YO Challenge Series.
