Arcachon (NZ) Makes Big Impression With Maiden Win

Three-year-old Pencarrow filly Arcachon (NZ) (Pierro) hinted at a bright future with a dominant maiden victory in Thursday’s $18,500 Vale Peter McKenzie (1200m) at Otaki.

Thursday’s race was the second career start for Arcachon, who had made up late ground for an eye-catching second over 1100 metres on debut at New Plymouth on December 7. She went to a new level on Thursday, settling just behind the leaders for jockey Lisa Allpress before swooping into contention at the home turn.

Arcachon produced a smart turn of foot down the Otaki straight, bounding away from her eight opponents. Eased down in the last few strides by Allpress, she crossed the finish line two and a quarter lengths in front of runner-up La Dulcin’ee (NZ) (Per Incanto).

The Allan Sharrock-trained Arcachon has now had two starts for a win, a second and $13,690 in stakes. The filly was bred by Pencarrow Thoroughbreds Ltd and is raced by Sir Peter Vela.

Arcachon is by top-quality Coolmore Australia stallion Pierro, who is the sire of 424 winners from 630 runners. His 35 individual stakes winners include Group One stars such as Arcadia Queen, Regal Power, Shadow Hero, Pierata, Levendi and Pinot.

The dam of Arcachon is Aveiro (NZ) (O’Reilly), an unraced daughter of Dolmabache (NZ) (Redoute’s Choice). Herself a Group Two winner, Dolmabache is a full-sister to Group Three winner Pure Elegance (NZ) (Redoute’s Choice) and a blood-sister to the Group One performer and sire Burgundy (NZ) (Redoute’s Choice). Other close relatives include the multiple Group One winner and successful sire Darci Brahma (NZ) (Danehill), along with Pencarrow’s legendary staying mare Ethereal (NZ) (Rhythm).

Arcachon is the first foal out of Aveiro, who has subsequently produced a filly by U S Navy Flag. She has since been served by All Too Hard.
