Maiden Success for Branciforti (NZ)

Three-year-old Pencarrow filly Branciforti (NZ) (Belardo) opened her account with an emphatic maiden victory in Wednesday’s $14,000 Shares Available Now @ Goracing.co.nz (1550m) at Cambridge.

The David Greene-trained filly had made two starts before Wednesday’s breakthrough success, finishing fourth behind classy filly Academy Award (NZ) (Star Turn) on debut at Taupo before a close eighth at Te Rapa on January 18.

The step from 1400 metres up to 1550 metres made all the difference on Wednesday, with Branciforti breaking alertly from gate two before settling in third place along the rail for jockey Sam Spratt. She swooped across to sit outside the two leaders rounding the home turn and quickly finished over the top of them down the straight, going clear to win by a length and a half.

Branciforti was bred by Pencarrow Thoroughbreds Ltd and is raced by Sir Peter Vela.

She is by Haunui Farm shuttle stallion Belardo, who is the sire of 143 winners from 274 runners worldwide including eight individual stakes winners. His standout performers in the southern hemisphere include Listed winner Avonallo (NZ) and stakes-placed Fellini (NZ), who have both finished third in the $1m Karaka Million 2YO (1200m).

The dam of Branciforti is Huluava (NZ) (Pins), who won three races and is a half-sister to Group One performer Hasselhoof (NZ) (Tavistock) and Listed winner and black-type producer Vercors (NZ) (Catbird).

Huluava is now the dam of an incredible nine winners from nine foals to race. William Wallace (NZ) (Darci Brahma) has been the best of them, winning eight races including two at Listed level. The unraced Hirondelle (NZ) (Sepoy) is the dam of this season’s Listed Wellesley Stakes (1100m) placegetter Pignan (NZ) (Staphanos).
