Northern Hemisphere Group Three Success for Rebel Moon
07 July 2026
Lightly raced three-year-old Rebel Moon (Lope De Vega), who was bred by Haras d'Étreham and Pencarrow principal Sir Peter Vela, stamped herself as a high-class filly with a black-type success in the Group Three Al Shira'aa Racing Irish EBF Jannah Rose Stakes (2100m) at Naas late last month.
Trained by Joseph O’Brien, Rebel Moon now has a perfect two-start, two-win record. She has earned €55,200 in stakes for her owners Al Shira'aa Racing Limited, who sponsored the Group Three feature.
Rebel Moon made her debut in a 1900-metre race at Gowran Park in April, winning convincingly by a length and a half. The third placegetter in that race, Johanna Walsh (Sea The Stars), later boosted that form with a second placing in Royal Ascot’s Group Two Ribblesdale Stakes (2400m).
O’Brien had no hesitation in raising the bar to black-type level for start number two, and Rebel Moon was up to the task.
Ridden by Dylan Browne McMonagle, Rebel Moon settled near the tail of the small field before commencing a big run from the back. She moved up to challenge the leader with 200 metres remaining, and slowly but surely overhauled that rival to score by a neck.
“We’re delighted with her,” O’Brien said.
“She did well to win on debut and the form has obviously worked out well. We just had a little hold-up with her after that race so we missed a little bit of time. This was an obvious target for her, given the ownership.
“It was a lovely ride from Dylan. She still looked green in the race, and I think there is a lot to come from her, hopefully.
“The second horse has good form and she probably got first run on us, and she’s obviously race-fit while we missed time.
“It’s tough to run a horse down here when they get away from you like that and the fractions were steady enough through the race.
“I think she’s won today from having a bit of class. I think, hopefully, that we are still scratching the surface.
“She has some nice options in France as well as in Ireland.”
Rebel Moon is one of 170 individual stakes winners worldwide for globally influential stallion Lope De Vega, who has sired just under 30 Group One winners including the likes of Santa Ana Lane, Arapaho, Belardo, Duke De Sessa, Vega Magic and Vega One.
The dam of Rebel Moon is Purely Priceless (Galileo), whose seven foals to race include six winners. Five of her progeny have performed at black-type level, and four of them are stakes winners.
Among those stakes-performed progeny of Purely Priceless are Alzire (Shamardal), Tasman Bay (Le Havre) and Pemba Bay (Blue Point), all co-bred by Sir Peter Vela or Pencarrow Stud. Tasman Bay raced in Sir Peter’s blue and white hooped colours and placed in the Group Two King Edward VII Stakes (2400m), Group Two Prix Guillaume d’Ornano (2000m) and Group Three Thoroughbred Stakes (1600m).
Purely Priceless is by the great Galileo out of high-class mare Peeping Fawn (Danehill), who won the Group One Epsom Oaks (2400m), Irish Oaks (2400m), Nassau Stakes (2000m) and Pretty Polly Stakes (2000m).
Peeping Fawn is the dam of September (Deep Impact), who won at Listed level and placed in the Group One Fillies’ Mile (1600m), Moyglare Stud Stakes (1400m) and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (1800m), along with fellow Listed winner Willow (American Pharoah). Another of Peeping Fawn’s foals, Sir John Hawkins (Henrythenavigator), placed in the Group Two Coventry Stakes (1200m) and Group Three Tyros Stakes (1400m).
Others in this exceptional family include Group One stars Thewayyouare (Kingmambo), Blush With Pride (Blushing Groom), Rags to Riches (A.P. Indy), Jazil (Seeking the Gold) and Streaming (Smart Strike).
