Pencarrow Bloodlines Boosted by Group Two Star
03 January 2025
Classy two-year-old Too Sweet (NZ) (Satono Aladdin) became the latest stakes winner for an iconic Pencarrow Stud family when she led all the way to win the $225,000 Group Two Skycity Eclipse Stakes (1200m) at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day.
The Roydon Bergerson-trained filly has now had three starts for two wins and a placing, earning $164,400 for an ownership group headed by Chris Rutten.
Too Sweet is by Satono Aladdin out of the Pencarrow-bred Sparkling Rose (NZ) (Bernardini), who descends from one of the stud’s greatest mares, Grand Echezeaux (NZ) (Zabeel). Sparkling Rose herself was unraced but is now making a mark of her own as a broodmare.
Her three foals to race include Too Sweet and the four-year-old Pencarrow mare Romanin (NZ) (Eminent), who has placed twice in a promising six-race career to date. Romanin is trained by Steven Ramsay and Julia Ritchie for owner Sir Peter Vela and was a last-start third placegetter at Ruakaka on December 18.
Sparkling Rose was sold as part of Pencarrow Stud’s annual reduction process on Gavelhouse.com in June of 2021, where her current owners secured her for $14,000.
Sparking Rose is a daughter of the winning mare Pink Bubbles (NZ) (Pins), who is the dam of three winners from four foals to race.
The dam of Pink Bubbles is Madame Echezeaux (NZ) (Montjeu), an unraced half-sister to the Pencarrow-bred Group One performers and star sires Darci Brahma (NZ) (Danehill) and Burgundy (NZ) (Redoute’s Choice).
Madame Echezaux is a daughter of the mighty Grand Echezeaux, a Group One winner and prolific broodmare who has underpinned so much of Pencarrow’s success in the last couple of decades.
Grand Echezeaux’s three-quarter-sister Romanee Conti (NZ) (Sir Tristram) was a Group winner in New Zealand, Australia and Hong Kong and was the dam of Pencarrow’s legendary Melbourne Cup (3200m) and Caulfield Cup (2400m) heroine Ethereal (NZ) (Rhythm).
This famous Pencarrow family features prominently in the stud’s Book 1 draft for Karaka 2025, with Lots 231, 281 and 312 descending from Ethereal, while Lots 365 and 465 have Grand Echezeaux’s full-sister Our Echezeaux (NZ) (Zabeel) as their third dam.
