Strong Results for Pencarrow at Karaka 2026
04 February 2026
The Book 1 and Book 2 sessions of NZB’s 100th National Yearling Sale at Karaka were a successful few days for Pencarrow Stud.
Pencarrow offered 22 horses across Sunday, Monday and Tuesday and sold 20 of them for a clearance rate of 91%.
The horses sold for a total of $2.97m and an average price of $148,250, including a Book 1 aggregate of $2.71 million and average of $169,375.
Pencarrow’s yearlings found new homes across New Zealand, Australia and Hong Kong, and two were even bought by South African bloodstock agent Craig Ramsay.
The headline act of Pencarrow’s Karaka 2026 draft was Lot 516, the filly by Toronado out of the stakes-performed Redoute’s Choice mare Les Crayeres (NZ). She was bought by Sarah Green and Ger Beemsterboer’s Barneswood Farm for $800,000. She was the highest-priced filly sold at Karaka 2026.
The Barneswood team have a proud history of buying quality horses from Karaka, guided by their long-time trainers, the now-retired Peter and Dawn Williams. Their previous purchases include Group One winners Planet Rock (Fastnet Rock), Media Sensation (I Am Invincible) and Desert Lightning (NZ) (Pride Of Dubai), along with multiple Group winner Vavasour (NZ) (Redoute’s Choice) and also Symphonic (NZ) (O’Reilly), from whom they bred the multiple Group One winner Orchestral (NZ) (Savabeel) and her full-sister that sold for $2.4m at Karaka last year.
“So excited to get this beautiful girl, we love her,” Barneswood Farm said on Facebook this week.
The second highest-priced yearling in the Pencarrow draft was Lot 365, a filly by Proisir out of Cote D’Or (NZ) (Makfi). That makes her a half-sister to last season’s Group One Queensland Derby (2400m) winner Maison Louis (NZ) (Super Seth). She was bought by Craig Ramsay for $380,000.
Ramsay also paid $160,000 for a Proisir colt out of Supera (NZ) (Savabeel), while Jamie Richards secured a Justify colt out of Fair Isle (NZ) (Fastnet Rock) for $260,000 and Te Akau Racing’s David Ellis paid $240,000 for a colt by Savabeel out of Sleeping Beauty (NZ) (Rip Van Winkle).
Other buyers of Pencarrow yearlings at Karaka 2026 included Tartan Meadow Bloodstock, Jason Warren Racing, Henry Dwyer Racing, Roger James and Robert Wellwood, Fortuna Racing and Bell Racing.
