Tavi Time (NZ) Adds to Telegraph Build-Up With Summer Cup Defence
27 December 2025
Memories of the scintillating performance by Guiseppina (NZ) (Johar) in the Group One Telegraph (1200m) in 2012 have come flooding back in recent weeks – especially with Tomodachi (NZ) (Tarzino) favoured to deliver another Pencarrow win in the same race on January 3, where Guiseppina’s jockey James McDonald has been booked for the ride.
Guiseppina provided an ideal curtain-raiser for that potential full-circle moment with a feature win by her son Tavi Time (NZ) (Tavistock) in Sydney on Boxing Day, eight days out from the 2026 edition of the Telegraph at Trentham.
The Kris Lees-trained Tavi Time recorded the first black-type win of his career in the A$250,000 Group Three Summer Cup (2000m) at Randwick on Boxing Day 2024, and he returned 12 months later to successfully defend that title on Friday.
Ridden by Dylan Gibbons, the six-year-old came from the back and scythed through the field with a scintillating finishing burst, going on to win by a length and a quarter.
“He has that electric turn of foot,” jockey Dylan Gibbons said. “I did say to Kris, if he was going to be lethargic early then I want to take the risk on an inside run. He really shot through. He can be electric on his day.”
Tavi Time was a $60,000 purchase from Pencarrow’s draft in Book 1 of Karaka 2021. He has now had 28 starts for 10 wins, six placings and A$1.1m in stakes. His Summer Cup triumph came after a series of close-up finishes behind the placegetters.
“It’s really good to get a win, especially for connections because it's been a really frustrating preparation right the way through,” Lees said.
“He is more than capable as we know. He got a lovely ride from Dylan, he got the right pressure up front. He bided his time and took the runs when they appeared, so it was a really good win."
Tavistock gelding Tavi Time is the best-performed of Guiseppina’s two foals to race. Her unraced daughter Peppino (NZ) (Savabeel) is the dam of three-race winner Enterprise (NZ) (U S Navy Flag).
Pencarrow will offer a colt by U S Navy Flag out of Guiseppina as Lot 465 during Book 1 of Karaka 2026 in late January.
