Persuasive Provides Winning Double

Pencarrow Racing enjoyed a second winner at Avondale yesterday with Persuasive (Darci Brahma) breaking her maiden status at just her second start in the $7,000 N-Compass Maiden 3YO 1400m.

The daughter of Darci Brahma finished runner-up on her debut, beaten less than a length on the same track for trainers Lance O’Sullivan and Andrew Scott.

Ridden by leading trans-Tasman jockey James McDonald, Persuasive settled near the tail of the field from an outside barrier before unleashing a strong sprint down the outside of the track to reigning the leader who kicked hard but the Pencarrow colours triumphed by half-a-head on the line.

“The draw took away our confidence a fair bit, especially with the pattern of racing early, so I couldn’t say we were confident,” commented co-trainer Andrew Scott.

“She showed something at the end of her two-year-old year, where she made a bit of ground at the barrier trials, and gave us some confidence that she had a turn of foot.

“We will take it day by day with her but I believe she will get more ground, being out of a Montjeu mare, so we are hoping she can join some of the three-year-old filly black-type races as they get a bit further in distance.”

Bred by Peter and Philip Vela, Persuasive is out Pertinacious, a daughter of the New Zealand Bloodstock Filly of the Year Sarwatch (Jetball) and dam of the handy racehorses Noble Manor and Promethean.

Pertinacious has a yearling filly by Sakhee’s Secret that has been retained by the Stud and was served by Darci Brahma’s son Super Easy, the Champion Racehorse of Singapore.

Pencarrow Racing enjoyed a fruitful outing with Makarska (Keeper) winning earlier in the day, Biddable (Exceed and Excel) finishing second, and Vendemaire (Perfectly Ready) and Dark and Stormy (Zabeel) both running third.
