Fashion News Here to Stay

Pencarrow Stud staying mare Fashion News (Pentire x Marie Claire) displayed her staying ability on Saturday with victory in the A$20,000 Aaron Toohey Accounting BM64 Handicap (2200m) at Geelong.

Fashion News has had one previous win which came earlier this year, also over 2200m, for Flemington trainers Leon and Troy Corstens. From her 12 starts, she had a consistent run of form as a four-year-old last season, placing on three consecutive occasions before breaking her maiden status.

“She did a great job,” commented Troy Corstens. “She clearly likes to stay. It was a suitable trip for her and she disposed of her rivals in a way we like to see.

“She will keep stepping up in distance. The owners have been very patient with her so hopefully she can re-pay them.”

Carrying Rosemont Stud’s colours from barrier 9 with jockey Darren Gauci aboard, Fashion News promptly went to the front to take the lead. Dropping back to second place mid-race, Gauci angled her to race to the outside of the front-runner on the home turn.

Powering down the straight, Fashion News fought for the lead and held on for victory by three-and-a-quarter-lengths over Meilucca (Zabeel) in second place and Rocknet (Fastnet Rock) in third.

Malua Bloodstock purchased the five-year-old mare for $120,000 from Pencarrow Stud at New Zealand Bloodstock’s 2012 Premier Sale and is now raced by a host of connections including Rosemont Stud Pty Ltd, Mr NG Austin, Mr PG Walsh, Ms TP Rothwell, Plenty Cc, Mr J Cucuzza, Six Amigos No. 2, Mrs LJ Corstens and Mrs KE Sawford.

Bred by Sir Peter and Philip Vela, the daughter of Pentire is out of stakes winning mare Marie Claire (O’Reilly), winner of the Listed GR Kelt Memorial Handicap and runner-up in the Group 1 Captain Cook Stakes. Marie Claire is a half-sister to Arrabeea (Zabeel), winner of the Group 3 Doomben Classic and the Group 3 Thoroughbred Club Stakes.

Pencarrow Stud will be offering a half-brother to Fashion News, by Commands, at New Zealand Bloodstock’s 2016 National Yearling Sales Series.

Fashion News was one of two Pencarrow Stud graduates to win in Australia on Saturday joining Rhythm to Spare (NZ) (Pins) winning at Flemington on Group 1 Emirates Stakes day.
