Two Matamata winners for Pencarrow

15 March 2018

Pencarrow’s racing team added another two victories to a highly successful season during Wednesday’s South Waikato Racing Club meeting at Matamata.

The first winner was the powerful four-year-old Devil May Care (NZ) (Lonhro), who scored an easy length-and-three-quarter win in the $10,000 Tokoroa Club Inc 1200. He was ridden by Opie Bosson for trainers Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards.

Devil May Care has now had four starts for a win and three placings.

“He’s had a few issues and the team at Pencarrow Stud have been patient and it’s lovely to win a race for Sir Peter Vela,” Richards said.

“The horse doesn’t mind a bit of give in the ground, so he’s in work at the right time of the year and hopefully he keeps improving.”

Bred by Pencarrow Thoroughbreds and raced by Sir Peter Vela, Devil May Care is out of the Stravinsky mare Devil’s Song (NZ), who is a half-sister to Group 1 New Zealand Oaks winner Vapour Trail (NZ) (Jetball) and Group 2 winner Santagostino (Giant’s Causeway).

Later in the day, the Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman-trained Podravina (NZ) (Bel Esprit) won the $12,000 NZB Insurance Pearl Series Race (1400m) in the hands of Matt Cameron.

Now with a win and a placing from three starts, Podravina is out of the Group 3-winning mare Posavina (NZ) (Tiger Hill), who is a half-sister to high-class Pencarrow galloper Rasa Lila (NZ) (Darci Brahma).
