Group 3 Win for Supera (NZ)

Pencarrow mare Supera (NZ) (Savabeel) claimed her first black-type win with a stellar performance in Saturday’s $70,000 Group 3 Tui – Backing a Winner Since 1889 Anniversary (1600m) at Trentham.

A last-start third in the Group 2 Cal Isuzu Stakes (1600m) on her stakes debut, Supera went to a new level on Sunday.

Ridden by Rosie Myers, the four-year-old sat well off the pace before producing a brilliant finishing burst along the inside. She dashed to the lead and opened up a clear advantage, scoring by two lengths from the proven Group 1 performer Wyndspelle (NZ) (Iffraaj).

“It’s important for a horse like her to get that black-type – it’s great on the pedigree page,” said Mark Donoghue, who trains in partnership with Ken and Bev Kelso. “She should go on with it now. Fingers crossed she’ll get to where she should.”

Supera is out of Ethereal’s unraced daughter Sopra Tutto (NZ) (Van Nistelrooy), who is the dam of four winners from five foals to race. The best of those to date has been Eleonora (NZ) (Makfi), who won two Group 3 races and placed in the Group 1 VRC Oaks (2500m).

Pencarrow Stud will offer a half-sister to Supera at Karaka 2019. The Makfi filly will go through the ring as Lot 421 in Book 1.
