Blueblood Colt Opens Winning Account
23 June 2025
The royally bred Central Coast (Wootton Bassett), part-owned by Sir Peter Vela, stamped himself as a black-type contender of the future with a stylish maiden win in Wednesday’s A$60,000 Myplates Handicap (1250m) at Canterbury.
The flashy near-black colt finished second on debut over the same course and distance on June 9, and on Wednesday he emphatically went one better.
In contrast to his debut, in which he raced up on the pace, Central Coast was ridden with cover in third spot on Wednesday by jockey Adam Hyeronimus. He raced keenly through the early stages, then was briefly held up when looking for a run in the straight.
But once he found clear air, Central Coast showed a touch of class and smart acceleration to get up and win by a long neck.
“He has a ton of ability and is such a cool dude with so much upside,” Hyeronimus said. “He got a bit strong there for a bit longer than I would have liked, but I think he just knows he’s a good racehorse and has good ability. The speed wasn’t anything spectacular, so him going so strongly wasn’t a negative on him.
“We were in a bit of an awkward position. For him to get out and accelerate the way he did was really good.”
Central Coast is trained by Chris Waller, who was represented at Canterbury by racing manager and assistant trainer Charlie Duckworth.
“We’re very pleased with that,” he said. “He was pretty keen down the back, which we didn’t really anticipate – he was beautifully calm pre-race.
“Adam just had to bide his time in the straight, and he was very good late. It was the plan to ride him with cover and then get him to utilise his turn of foot. We’re pleased that he had that, because he needed it today.
“There’s a Listed 1400-metre race in 10 days’ time in Queensland, which he could head towards. Whether he runs there or not, it won’t be long before he heads out for a spell ahead of a big three-year-old year.”
Central Coast’s two-start, one-win career has so far earned A$51,850 for Sir Peter Vela and his ownership partners Coolmore, Wynaus, Westerberg, Joe Poulin, Chris Waller Racing, Lynque, Peachester Lodge, Robert McClure, Meridian Bloodstock, Lockhart Waller Racing, Glentree Racing and Mr K MacLennan.
Central Coast was a A$1.4 million yearling purchase. He is by one of the world’s most in-demand sires, Wootton Bassett, who will stand for a service fee of A$385,000 at Coolmore Australia in the spring.
Central Coast is the second foal out of the champion three-year-old filly and triple Group One winner Sunlight (Zoustar). Central Coast’s three-year-old half-brother Dawn Service (Justify) won this season’s Listed Exford Plate (1400m) at Flemington.
