Third Win for Unequivocal (NZ)

Pencarrow mare Unequivocal (NZ) (Eminent) collected the third win of her promising staying career in Wednesday’s $17,000 Cambridge Equine Hospital (2000m) on the Polytrack at Cambridge.

The four-year-old has now had 15 starts for three wins, four placings and $70,050 in stakes.

Previously a maiden winner over 2000 metres at Cambridge in June of 2024 and a dominant Rating 65 winner over 2200 metres at Tauherenikau in December, Unequivocal went on to finish a highly creditable third in the $125,000 Dunstan Horsefeeds Stayers’ Championship Final (2400m) at Ellerslie on Boxing Day. That race was won by About Time (NZ) (American Pharoah), who later finished second in the Group Two Avondale Cup (2400m).

Unequivocal kicked off her latest campaign with a strong-finishing fourth over 1550 metres on June 4, and the step up to 2000 metres on Wednesday was right up her alley. Rider Michael McNab settled her in second-last before launching a big finish in the straight. She drew alongside Prometheus (NZ) (Ace High) in the final 100 metres and edged ahead in the last few strides to win by a long neck. The third placegetter finished two lengths behind the first pair.

Unequivocal was bred by Pencarrow Thoroughbreds Ltd and is raced by Sir Peter Vela, whose famous blue and white hooped colours were also worn by her sire Eminent.

Sir Peter Vela raced Eminent throughout a 14-start career that began in the United Kingdom with a victory at Newmarket as a two-year-old. He added the Group Three Prix Guillaume d’Ornano (2000m) at Deauville and Newmarket’s Group Three Craven Stakes (1600m) as a three-year-old, along with a third in the Group One Irish Champion Stakes (2000m) and a fourth in the Group One Epsom Derby (2400m).

An Irish-bred son of the legendary racehorse and superb sire Frankel, Eminent later travelled to Australia, where he ran second behind Avilius (Pivotal) in the Group One Ranvet Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill. He now stands at Brighthill Farm and has made a promising start, siring 30 winners from 70 runners to date. Unequivocal, Sunset Boulevard (NZ), Uplifting (NZ) and Golden (NZ) have all scored victories in the Pencarrow colours.

Unequivocal is the first foal out of Philosophical (NZ) (Darci Brahma), who herself was a winner in the Pencarrow colours at Otaki in 2019.

Philosophical is a daughter of the stakes-winning Pencarrow mare Mirandola (NZ) (O’Reilly), whose dam Paolino (NZ) (Housebuster) won five times up to Group Two level and is a half-sister to the multiple Group winner and successful producer Sarwatch (NZ) (Jetball).

Philosophical’s second foal is an unnamed three-year-old filly by Tarzino (NZ), and she later returned to Eminent and produced a filly born in the spring of 2022.
