Dresse’ Par Joli (NZ) Brings Up Pencarrow Milestone
03 June 2025
Pencarrow reached a century of winners for the 2024-25 season when Dresse’ Par Joli (NZ) (Tavistock) took out the $35,000 Wanganui Insurance Brokers (2040m) at Wanganui on Saturday.
The 100 wins by Pencarrow-bred horses this season include no fewer than 10 at Group or Listed level.
Two of those stakes successes have come with homebreds racing in the Pencarrow colours – three-year-old filly Island Life (NZ) (Vadamos) in the $250,000 Group Three Sunline Vase (2100m) at Ellerslie in March and four-year-old mare Tomodachi (NZ) (Tarzino) in the $100,000 Group Three Rotorua Stakes (1400m) in May.
The other black-type wins have all been delivered by horses bred and sold by Pencarrow.
The headline act is Feroce (NZ) (Super Seth), who was a $160,000 purchase from the 2023 Ready to Run Sale at Karaka. He has earned more than A$1.3m in a 10-start, three-win career, headed by a superb triumph in the A$1m Group One Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington in March. He was also runner-up in the Group One Caulfield Guineas (1600m) in the spring and ran third in the Group Three Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) and CS Hayes Stakes (1400m).
Mehzebeen (NZ) (Almanzor), who was a $50,000 purchase from Pencarrow’s Book 1 draft at Karaka 2021, has been a triple black-type winner this season in the $400,000 Group Three New Zealand Cup (3200m), the $120,000 Listed Hawke’s Bay Cup (2200m) and the $100,000 Listed Metropolitan Trophy (2600m).
Another draft of Pencarrow’s Book 1 draft at Karaka 2021 is Tavi Time (NZ) (Tavistock), who was bought for $60,000. He won this season’s A$250,000 Group Three Summer Cup (2000m) and A$200,000 Listed Scone Cup (1600m), and he was runner-up in Saturday’s A$200,000 Group Three Lord Mayor’s Cup (1800m).
Jay Bee Gee (NZ) (Complacent) was bought for $26,000 from Book 2 of Karaka 2019. He recorded a Group Three double within the first few weeks of the season, taking out the $110,000 Winter Cup (1600m) and the $100,000 Metric Mile (1600m).
Saturday’s Rating 65 victory at Wanganui was the second win of a promising 11-start career for Dresse Par Joli, who is trained by Allan Sharrock. The New Plymouth horseman shares ownership with his brother Bruce, along with Dean McKenzie and Pencarrow principal Sir Peter Vela. Dresse Par Joli has also been a five-time placegetter and has earned $41,980 in stakes.
Dresse Par Joli was bred by Pencarrow Thoroughbreds Ltd and is the first foal out of Cote D’Or (NZ) (Makfi), who won eight races in the Pencarrow colours including the Listed Matamata Cup (1600m). Cote D’Or is also the dam of the promising three-year-old Maison Louis (NZ) (Super Seth), who is entered for the postponed Group One Queensland Derby (2400m) at Eagle Farm next Saturday.
Cote D’Or is a half-sister to the Group Two winner Dolmabache (NZ) (Redoute’s Choice), Group Three winner Pure Elegance (NZ) (Redoute’s Choice) and Group Three-placed Les Crayeres (NZ) (Redoute’s Choice).
Their dam Our Echezeaux (NZ) (Zabeel) is a full-sister to Grand Echezeaux (NZ) (Zabeel), who won at Group One level and is the dam of quality racehorses and sires Darci Brahma (NZ) (Danehill) and Burgundy (NZ) (Redoute’s Choice).
